A short history of Stoicism: how it started in Athens, the key figures in Greece and Rome, and why it still matters.

Stoicism ran for roughly five centuries and was shaped by dozens of thinkers. Most of their writing is lost. Here is a quick guide to the names you will meet most often.

The Greek founders

Zeno of Citium (c. 334–262 BC) taught in Athens at the Stoa Poikile, the "painted porch", which gave the school its name. Cleanthes succeeded him and wrote the Hymn to Zeus, one of the few early Stoic texts to survive in full. Chrysippus (c. 279–206 BC) systematised Stoic logic and ethics, and later writers treated him as the school's greatest authority.

The Roman Stoics

The Stoic writing most people read today comes from the Roman period.

Why it lasted?

Stoicism offered a way to live well whatever your circumstances, which is why it appealed to a former slave and an emperor alike. That same practicality explains its modern revival, including its influence on cognitive behavioural therapy.

Lesser-known names worth knowing

The three parts of Stoic philosophy

The Stoics divided philosophy into three linked parts, sometimes compared to an orchard: logic as the protective wall, physics as the trees, and ethics as the fruit.

How Stoicism faded, and returned?

After Marcus Aurelius, Stoicism declined as a distinct school, but its ideas were absorbed into early Christian thought and later philosophy. Renaissance thinkers such as Justus Lipsius revived interest, and writers from Montaigne to Adam Smith drew on Stoic ideas.

In the 20th century, the psychologists Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck cited Epictetus's idea that our judgements shape our emotions as an influence on their therapies. Today's revival includes popular books, podcasts and the academic-led Modern Stoicism project.
